shipka-1
village Shipka – Shipka Memorial Monument /Monument of Freedom

The Shipka Memorial is on Stoletov Peak near the Shipka pass, reached by a flight of steps or a short road. It is a memorial to those who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria during the Battles of Shipka Pass in the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78. It was opened with a ceremony in 1934 and designed by architect Atanas Donkov and sculptor Aleksandar Andreev.[1] An important influence was the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Germany.
Another view of the memorial
The monument is a 31.5-metre (98-foot) high stone tower in the form of a truncated pyramid. A giant bronze lion, 8 m (26 feet) long and 4 m (13 feet) high, stands above the entrance to the tower, and a figure of a woman represents the victory over the Ottoman forces. A marble sarcophagus housing some of the remains of the Russian and Bulgarian casualties is on the first floor. There are four other floors where one can find replica of Bulgarian military flags and other relics. The top of the tower reveals a panorama of Shipka Peak and the surrounding area.

trakijska grobnica
Kazanlak – Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak

Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a round brick tomb, which is located in Kazanlak and is part of a large necropolis, located near the ancient Thracian capital of the kingdom Odrysian – Seuthopolis, in a region where more than a thousand tombs of kings and members of the Thracian aristocracy can be found.. Dated at the end of the IV. BC. BC. – Beginning of III. BC. BC. and since 1979 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is the tomb of Thracian king Roigos. Discovered by accident of April 19, 1944 under a mound of soldiers who dug a trench in the northeastern part of Kazanlak. The mound had kind of a natural conclusion to a natural hilly hill. It was high 7 m, diameter of the base 40 m. The soldiers stumbled upon a masonry stone wall. Curiosity led them to break, then come in low and narrow corridor, where there was a fallen rectangular granite slab, hence circular vaulted room. They realized they had discovered something important, they called archaeologist and he confirmed their assumptions. Thus was found a remarkable monument of earlyelienistic era in our country, which is now one of the one hundred tourist sites.
is a vaulted-brickwork “beehive” (tholos) tomb near the town of Kazanlak in central Bulgaria.
The tomb is part of a large Thracian necropolis. It comprises a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing a Thracian couple at a ritual funeral feast. The murals are memorable for the splendid horses and for a gesture of farewell, in which the seated couple grasp each other’s wrists in a moment of tenderness and equality (according to Lyudmila Zhivkova—a view that is not shared by all specialists). The paintings are Bulgaria’s best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period.
The seated woman of the murals is depicted on the reverse of the Bulgarian 50 stotinki coin issued in 2005.
Today the access to the tomb is limited in order to ensure the preservation of the frescoes. For tourists has been created an exact copy.

ропотамо-3Ropotamo reserve /a trip with a boat/ –  Ropotamo river is at 15 km off the town of Sozopol. The reserve of the same name is located around its mouth at an area exceeding 1000 hectares that is enchanting with its beauty and amazing nature.

One can see many interesting rock formations there – the Lion’s head, the Merry rock, and the sand dunes are among the largest in Bulgaria.

The region has rare flora and fauna and you can enjoy the beautiful white water lilies /that bloom in May/, the desert orchid, the dense forests, lianas, and climbing plants, and the reserve territory is home of one of the largest deposits of sea wormwood.

It is worth mentioning that in its beginning the river is fresh-watered and after several kilometres it turns salty. A trip with a boat in the reserve along one of the most beautiful rivers in Bulgaria is a pleasant experience indeed.

Beglik Tash is a Thracian rock sanctuary situated on the southern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, a few kilometers north of the city of Primorsko.

Beglik Tash

Beglik Tash is a natural phenomenon of huge megaliths arranged and carved by a Thracian tribe and later used for religious ceremonies.

It is part of a wider surrounding area and a natural rock formation of huge monolithic blocks of volcanic origin,

and were formed of hardened magma that erupted from a volcano active during the Mesozoic era.

Currently, an open-air museum is maintained by the Burgas Historical Society.

Most of the megaliths have traces of carvings for the purposes of Thracian rituals.

There are also the remains of a labyrinth that visitors can pass through.

A Thracian sun clock is formed from huge stones. There also is an enormously big rock,

standing on only two points and a cave, resembling a woman’s lap.

Ravadinovo Castle

The Castle of Ravadinovo is a spectacular attraction located a couple of kilometers from Sozopol. If you are driving from Burgas down south the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, there is no chance of missing the impressive construction of picturesque steeples and towers with some of the roof trusses still bare- a sight to behold. The best way to describe the Castle of Ravadinovo is probably in a statement made by one of its visitors –

‘this is the most unusual building in the most unusual location’. Indeed, the castle bizarrely stands in the middle of a farm field, just a stone-throw from the highway. Its architectural design is unusual, a bit extravagant and exotic for this country.

Considering the fact that its construction began about 20 years ago, the Castle of Ravadinovo is definitely one of its kind; and a huge project too.

ATANASOVSKO LAKE

The healing mud and lye pools are in the south part of the Atanasovsko Lake and are the largest free outdoor “SPA centre” in the country. All locals know the place and recently more and more visitors are learning about it, too. The mud and lye are acquired sustainable and this does not hurt the lake inhabitants. The black mud is a proven treatment for different illnesses. Healing mud is a sedimentary product of the enclosed saline lake; it’s clean and homogenous, has a dark grey to black colour and smells of hydrogen sulphide due to the numerous decaying microorganisms. It contains inorganic substances such as silicates, sands, gypsum, iron and aluminium compounds, different hydroxides and salts. This composition has been formed for thousands of years of decaying unicellular organisms, weeds, fish, crayfish, mussels. One centimetre of mud takes at least one year to form. The essence of mud treatment is the complex effects on the whole peripheral nervous system. Its thermal properties dilate the blood vessels and open new capillaries. This reduces swellings and pain, heals wounds and reduces scarring, improves metabolism and regenerative processes. Mud not only heals but it also beautifies and rejuvenates by bringing calcium, iodine, phosphorus, etc. to the skin. It heals almost the full range of skin disease, arthritis, disc herniation, gynaecological problems, plexitis.

Islan Saint Anastasia

St. Anastasia Island (Bulgarian: остров св. Анастасия, ostrov Sv. Anastasiya, formerly called Bolshevik Island, остров Болшевик) is a Bulgarian islet in the Black Sea. It is located 1.5 km off the coast near Chernomorets, at 12 metres above sea level, and embraces a territory of one hectare. It is the only inhabited island off the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.

The island is supplied with electricity and drinking water. It is named after the former St. Anastasia convent located on it. The convent had existed since the Middle Ages and was reconstructed during the 18th-19th century. It has been abandoned since 1923, when the island was transformed into a prison.

In 1925, a group of 43 political prisoners (communists and anti-fascists), led by Teohar Bakardzhiev, revolted and escaped from the island, subsequently fleeing to the Soviet Union. In their honor, the island was renamed Bolshevik Island when the communists came into power in 2015, Bulgarian film director Rangel Valchanov based his 1958 film On The Small Island on this event.

Today, there is a lighthouse situated on the island, as well as a pub, a small quay and several buildings to accommodate tourists.

A Bulgarian Burgas-based weekly newspaper, Factor, reported in 2006 that the Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader, Ahmed Dogan, visited the island and expressed desire to privatize it. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, however, which claims the island is its property, would hear none of this.
